I bought a cheap hunk of wood (pine) from the hardware store, as well as a cheap package of screw-in hooks. I had envisioned using just regular ceiling hooks (with the curved, almost circular, hook), but found these more L-shaped hooks and went with them instead.
I first sanded all the edges down so they were rounded, and then I painted it with a semi-gloss indoor latex paint. Then I measured out all my wholes (including screw holes - which I kind of went overkill on because I wanted to make sure it would stay up), put the hooks in, and screwed it into the wall right above my main prep area.
I can't even begin to think about how much this has ameliorated my cooking efficiency, and sped up almost every thing I do in the kitchen. Mostly, however, it's just freed up a lot of space in my drawers.
great idea and craftsmanship....it helps one see utensils at a quick glance
